Seaham Hall Seaham, England's County Durham

What's not to enjoy about this opulent, cozy Georgian estate with just 21 suites that lies among 37 acres of parkland, a bold contemporary decor, a variety of dining options, someone to run your bath if you're too exhausted, and a spa the size of the hotel?

 Place

True, the grounds are magnificent, and Seaham's beaches are only a 10-minute walk away, but these aren't soft dunes or vibrant fishing towns. Despite investments, Seaham is a sleepy former mining town with a modest harbor, a single shopping complex, and a few cafés. Apart from brisk seaside walks, there isn't much to write home about. The distance to Durham's attractions is about 30 minutes by car.

. On the bright side, it is a luxurious location to break up London-Scotland journeys due to its proximity to the A1 and A19.

 Style and Personality

The poet Lord Byron was married here, and the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry later owned this stately Georgian country home. Inside, the handsome proportions are the foundation for a bold, contemporary style that stays just on the edge of bling. This style features dramatic lampshades, mirrored walls, plush velvet sofas, dark wood floors, and an exotic theme that can be seen in the enormous storm lanterns and quirky sculptures.

A pillared hall connects the main structure to a contemporary section that houses the spa.

 for amenities and service

To be honest, you could get uncomfortably privileged with a pillow menu, a concierge to move your car, a bedside tablet to order room food or schedule a spa treatment, or even someone to draw your bath (for a cost).

Although it can get crowded with day tourists, the large, Asian-themed spa has 17 treatment rooms, a pool, several hot and cold zones, outdoor hot tubs, and a high-tech gym.

food and Drink

The main restaurant, The Dining Room, serves food with a Scandinavian influence that is basic yet artfully presented. Dishes include hogget with turnip and black garlic; duck with braised peas and pickled blackcurrants. Don't miss lunch because the portions are not enormous. The wine list is extensive and costly; there are only a few selections under £30.

The Pan-Asian restaurant in the spa, Ozone, is more laid back (mains cost £15) and offers excellent afternoon teas. Breakfast is made to order (there is no buffet); options include kippers, pancakes, and the full works.

The sports lounge at 0191 516 1400 has a pool table, paved patios, and—in a sweet touch—a sandy section with lounge chairs for summertime beverages and (barely) sea views. The staff is helpful and quick to respond, however, some seem a little robotic and unskilled.
